Description

Globalization has become a buzz word. Globalization is a reality today because its magnitude, diversity and complexity involve almost everyone, everything, and every place. Globalization is looked upon by some as the opening to an exciting new world generating fresh economic opportunities while others criticize it as harmful and domination by the wealthier over developed nations over the poor under developed nations. In the context of the growth of postcolonial studies and indigenization of knowledge, and with reference to post structural and postmodern criticism of social theory, the field of development studies has also undergone a significant critique and rethinking. Hence, it is very timely and relevant to revisit the connections between globalization and development in specific Indian context. The papers in the book highlight on this theme. The present volume is a collection of some of the papers presented in the National Seminar organized by Department of Sociology, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh on 1617 March, 2013 on the theme "Globalization and Development" under the DRSI program sanctioned by the University Grants Commission. The papers in the book may differ from each other in terms of their specific thrust or even style. But each of them revolves round the common central theme of the book, i.e. "globalization", "health" and "development".
