Description

This book describes the widespread issue of hunger and malnutrition, with a particular focus on India and the state of Haryana. Globally, over 820 million people suffer from chronic hunger, and India contributes a significant share of this burden. Hunger in India severely affects children’s physical and mental development, learning ability, and overall human capital formation, thereby hindering sustainable economic growth. The study explains that hunger includes not only lack of food but also various forms of undernutrition such as stunting, wasting, and micronutrient deficiencies (“hidden hunger”). India faces serious challenges, with a high percentage of undernourished and malnourished children. According to global rankings like the Global Hunger Index, India falls into the “serious” category of hunger, showing limited progress over time. Aligned with the “Zero Hunger” goal under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the study emphasizes the importance of ensuring food security and recognizing access to food as a basic human right. The main objectives of the research are to assess hunger levels across districts of Haryana, construct a Hunger Index using established international methodologies, analyze both chronic and hidden hunger, and rank districts based on hunger indicators. The study relies on secondary data from sources such as NSSO, NFHS, WHO, UNICEF, and FAO, focusing on the period from 2008 to 2018. It covers all districts of Haryana across six administrative divisions. Statistical tools like averages, correlation, regression, and BMI analysis are used to evaluate and interpret the data.
