Description

Gender study in English literature uses gender theory as a critical lens to analyze how gender shapes literary texts, characters, and societal norms, focusing on the construction of masculinity, femininity, and the third gender across different historical periods. It examines the representation of gender, the influence of patriarchy, and challenges stereotypical portrayals by studying both authors and exploring the often overlooked experiences of women in literature. Gender is seen as a social and historical construct, not a biological fact, that evolves over time and place. The field identifies and challenges the reinforcement of gender stereotypes in literary works, analyzing how societal expectations influence character behavior and narratives. It analyzes the portrayal of female and male subjects, exploring the production of female subjectivities and the dynamics of gender roles within patriarchal systems. Gender analysis examines the cultural conditions and literary practices of different periods to understand how gender norms have been constructed and contested. Feminist Criticism focuses on the shared experiences of oppression by women, their struggles against patriarchal language, and the emergence of subversion in women's writings. Masculinity Studies also expands to explore different forms of masculinity and their social relations. Gender studies considers the intersection of gender with other social categories like race and class to understand how these systems of inequality operate in literature. Gender studies provides a critical framework for analyzing texts, moving beyond a superficial reading to uncover deeper social and cultural meanings. By highlighting diverse gender perspectives and challenging traditional norms, gender-aware approaches promote greater inclusivity and diversity in literary studies. The field draws on insights from sociology, cultural studies, and other disciplines to offer a holistic understanding of gender's impact on individuals and society. Gender Study meant for students of P.G. and U.G. standards is based on the new syllabus. The book discusses the subject of gender through the literary works.
