Description

The book comprises six chapters and covers various aspects of copper hoards which provide insights into the pre-historic culture of the Upper Gangetic Plain. The author reconstructs the material life of the people based on the evidence available. The book also deals with the geography, drainage system, type of soil, climate, vegetation, and flora & fauna of the Upper Gangetic Valley. It presents a chronological account of the early colonization of the Gangetic Valley, including excavations and explorations of settlements dating from the Copper Bronze Age. The study specifies three distinct cultural groups, namely predominantly Harappan, Ochre Coloured Pottery, and late Harappan traits with co-existing Ochre Coloured Pottery. Further, the book describes various prehistoric copper implements and tools found on the Upper Gangetic Plain, thereby reconstructing the material life of the Upper Gangetic Valley. The book attempts to reconstruct their history by identifying their agricultural tools, types of houses they built, festivals, religious beliefs, and social life. There are also maps, plates, and graphs illustrating the geographical and socio-cultural aspects of the Bronze Age, along with data arranged chronologically.
